The 85,000-Worker Problem: Why Big Installers Grew 86% and Small Firms Got Left Behind

Everyone in Australian solar has been talking about the battery rebate. Almost nobody has been talking about the number that explains why some installers rode it to record growth while others watched leads pile up they could not get to.

That number is 85,000: the additional clean energy workers Jobs and Skills Australia estimates the country needs by 2030. More than half of those roles are already in occupations officially declared in national shortage.

The split nobody fully explained

Industry research found that 78% of solar businesses grew off the back of the battery rebate, but growth was uneven. Installers with more than $1 million in revenue reported 86% rebate-driven growth, compared with 69% for small-to-medium firms and 67% for trade-crossover businesses.

Larger firms could flex installation crews when demand spiked. Smaller businesses hit a physical ceiling—not because they lacked leads, but because they could not install everything they sold.

Why hiring alone will not solve it

This is a national, structural shortage. Small installers are competing with solar, construction, EV infrastructure, and grid-scale renewable projects for the same accredited electrical workers. Bigger firms can also out-pay them.

Hiring remains necessary, but it cannot be the entire growth plan. When installation capacity is capped, the lever still fully in your control is conversion, not capacity.

What to do this quarter

  1. Audit conversion before hiring. Find leads waiting hours or days for follow-up and website visitors who never become enquiries.
  2. Protect every existing lead. When capacity is scarce, replacing a lost lead is more expensive than ever.
  3. Build subcontractor relationships—but do not rely on them alone. Flexible crews help with peaks, not a national workforce gap.
  4. Get efficient everywhere except installation. Qualification, follow-up, and customer experience remain open terrain.

The businesses that come out ahead will be the ones that stop trying to out-hire a national shortage and start squeezing more value from the leads and traffic they already have.
